Chiropractic can help in Pregnancy
Pregnancy can be a time of joy and excitement. Yet for some the experience is diminished by pain, discomfort and illness. This is often because pregnant women undergo many structural and hormonal changes that affect the spine, nerves, joints, ligaments, connective tissues, posture, and stability. The doctor of chiropractic can ensure that the spine, pelvis, and related soft tissue structures are balanced and moving freely.
Chiropractic care has been observed to help pregnant and birthing women in a number of ways. Chiropractors have been performing adjustments on pregnant women for over a hundred years and have noted that chiropractic care may help maintain pregnancy, control vomiting during pregnancy, assist in easier deliveries, have success with back pain, premature labor, and back labour.
One study revealed that first time pregnancy moms who received chiropractic care averaged 24% shorter labor times than controls, and women who had prior pregnancies and received chiropractic care averaged 39% shorter labors than controls. Chiropractic care has shown to correct breech presentations in which the baby is not positioned properly for birth. Correction of the mother’s spinal and pelvic alignment allows the uterus supported in the pelvis to change shape, helping the unborn child to turn and position itself properly for a healthy birth presentation. This is safe, has very little risk, and an evaluated 86-97% success rate.
Post-partum women value the chiropractic assistance in aligning their spinal mechanics and pelvis after the stress of delivery. Breast-feeding and child carrying activities also add to postural challenges that could create complaints such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches.
